Crisis leadership on the fairway: How the PGA of America found its moral compass
EKA Partner Eric Rose wrote an opinion piece in PR Week on the PGA of America’s handling of the Ryder Cup. The PGA made an initial misstep in their response to the criticism that American spectators were abusing their European competitors. Later they changed their tune, acknowledging the poor behavior and vowing to do better.
Key Updates
LA County CEO given $2 million settlement after she says Measure G caused "emotional and mental distress"
The LA County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a $2 million settlement for CEO Fesia Davenport due to what she characterized as “physical, emotional and mental distress” caused by Measure G, which converted her appointed position to an elected one starting in 2028. The settlement, approved in a July 29th closed session, reflects supervisors’ concerns about potential litigation from Davenport, though experts questioned the legitimacy of her claims. Measure G, passed by voters in 2024, also increased the Board from five to nine members and created an elected county executive position, fundamentally changing LA County’s governance structure for the first time in decades.
LA Mayor Karen Bass lays out her vision for 2028 LA Olympics
On Friday, October 17, Mayor Karen Bass laid out her vision for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Mayor announced a series of orders focused on mobility and transit, city services and streamlining bureaucratic processes like permitting for Olympics-related projects. The directive called for the City’s Office of Major Events to work with a group of city departments to make a list of public right-of-way and mobility projects to prioritize and fast-track.
Part of the mayor’s directive also seeks to bring in money from the Games. Bass is asking her staff to look into renting city properties to countries, organizations and other interest groups that will come to town in 2028.

Board Proclaims Local Emergency Over Federal Immigration Enforcement
The LA County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to approve a Proclamation of Local Emergency for Federal Immigration Actions in response to escalating ICE enforcement operations affecting the county’s 3 million immigrants. Introduced by Supervisors Lindsey Horvath and Janice Hahn, the proclamation enables the county to mobilize resources, expedite contracting, coordinate interagency response, and request state and federal assistance to protect impacted communities. The declaration serves as a precursor to potential eviction moratoriums for households losing income due to raids, with Supervisor Barger casting the lone dissenting vote citing concerns about legal challenges and the measure not meeting emergency criteria. County officials report over 5,000 arrests in LA as part of ongoing federal immigration operations.
