Los Angeles News & Updates from EKA – October 22, 2026
EKA Spotlight
EKA client Niagara Bottling’s philanthropic division, Niagara Cares, brought its award-winning national LOVE campaign to San Pedro on September 19, as reported by Random Lengths News. More than 80 residents and volunteers planted succulents, mulched the old fire station lot, picked up litter and hauled away bulky items around North Mesa Avenue and Amar Street. Niagara Cares co-funds the campaign with Keep America Beautiful. It began in Austin in 2024 and now reaches cities including Dallas, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento and Venice Beach. Keep California Beautiful, Councilmember Tim McOsker’s office and the LA Conservation Corps partnered on the San Pedro launch, which runs through December 2026.
Key Updates
County Selected for Homeless Count and Federal Funding Role
The Los Angeles Continuum of Care voted October 13 to select the County’s Department of Homeless Services and Housing to handle the annual homeless count and the region’s federal homelessness funding application. The selection represents a significant proposed transfer of responsibilities from LAHSA. Court approval and the timing of the transition remain important next steps. Separate decisions about the region’s homelessness database and housing-referral system were still unresolved in the cited reporting.
LAUSD Opens Discussion of School Closures and Consolidation
LAUSD has begun community discussions about possible school closures and consolidations as enrollment declines and financial pressures mount. Preliminary enrollment for 2026-27 is about 374,000 students, more than 40% below the district’s early-2000s level. Officials have not identified campuses for closure and are developing the criteria that would guide decisions. Any closure proposals would require school-board action, leaving families and community organizations an opportunity to participate before specific changes are approved.

LA Controller Subpoenas LA28 Financial Records
Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia issued a subpoena seeking additional financial records from LA28, including contract information and venue-construction budgets. The request follows concerns that required disclosures under the Games Agreement remain incomplete. The dispute matters because the city serves as a financial backstop for the Olympics. In LAist’s updated report, LA28 said it had not yet reviewed the subpoena and remained focused on delivering fiscally responsible Games.
